The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services mandates a minimum 40 hour training program for the basic security guard course.
Content covered within the course includes; Introduction to the Security Industry; The Private Security and Investigative Services Act; Basic Security Procedures; Report Writing; Health and Safety; Emergency Response Preparation; Canadian Legal System; Legal Authorities; Effective Communications; Sensitivity Training; Use of Force Theory; and Emergency Level First Aid Certification.
No. This is an extremely practical component and as such requires in class training through instructors with recognized credentials. It is an 8 hour day in a traditional class setting.

Once you have successfully completed the mandatory training, you will be able to register for the Ontario Security Guard License Exam with the Training Completion Number provided to you.
To register for the exam you can visit www.ontariosecuritytesting.ca and follow the prompts.
After you have completed the exam, it takes approximately 5 business days to receive your results.
Once you receive confirmation of a passing grade, you can apply for your license online or by mail through the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services website at http://www.mcscs.jus.gov.on.ca/english/PSIS/ApplyforaLicence/PSIS_apply.html
If you apply online, you will be able to check the status of your application within two business days through your Service Ontario account.
If you apply by mail, you can contact the Private Security and Investigative Services Program toll free at 1-866-767-7454 or privatesecurity@ontario.ca.
You must have a valid license card to work as a security guard. Working without a valid license is a violation of the Private Security and Investigative Services Act and may lead to charges.
However, if you apply for a license through Service Ontario, you will be able to access a digital license through your online account as soon as your application is approved. This is considered a valid license so long as you print this document and carry it on your person while on duty.
